In 2016, the Hermanus Astronomy Centre in partnership with the Overstrand Municipality, many local schools, businesses and National organizations, designed and constructed a true scale model of our Solar System along the Cliff Path between the Old Harbour and Grotto Beach.
It is considered a true scale model as the scale applied for the sizes of the eight Planets and the dwarf planet, Pluto, is exactly the same as the scale applied for the average distances between the planets and the Sun.
The aim of the model is to provide information about the solar system to hikers along the Cliff Path, as well as affording them the opportunity to observe the relative sizes of the Planets and to appreciate the extreme distances of the Planets from the Sun, as well as to experience the vast emptiness of our Solar System.
